Final Reflection

I learned many things from my applied study experience. These past 8 weeks have been extremely time consuming. I feel like this experience made me feel like I was thrown into the real world. I learned much about myself and really put my work ethic and communication skills to test. I learned what it really means to start up from the bottom and the true meaning of responsibility and patience. This experience has made me grow because it has honestly helped me in my process of finding out what I really want to do with my life. The main skill this internship has taught me is my improvement of confidence in the working environment. I always believed I had great communication skills but things are very different when you are in NYC, in an office building, and sitting at a desk all day for instance. I was finally able to put to test all the concepts and skills I was taught at Arizona State. I definitely feel that it was a positive experience because I learned that life is tough and finding something that makes me happy is far more rewarding to me. The only thing I would of changed that I did not think about when I chose this applied study that I hope others realize in the future is that commuting to a non paid internship is no fun! Driving and taking the trains from New Jersey to New York and back is expensive and tiring. This experience has opened my eyes even wider and I now understand that no one is going to hand you your dream. You have to go get it…

Improve

There are a few things I would suggest that would improve Metropolitan Talent. The first thing that stands out is the way co workers communicate with each other in the office. Google Talk or AIM is used to talk to each other. I think face to face communication is much better in every aspect. There are many things being sent back and forth to each other through e mail such as press releases and ads for the concerts to be revised but people can walk a few feet to talk to each other instead of sitting at their desk all day. We are a promoting company that does not even communicate well with each other. I think they could utilize the social networking sites better. A blog is not going to attract enough traffic to their website.
I would incorporate more guerrilla marketing. I would have our name on more bus benches, subway posters, improve the flyering, radio, and TV ads.

Interview

Interview with Chelsea: July 7, 2010

What types of challenges do you face?
When it comes to challenges, I’d say our only issue is that occasionally communication can get garbled. For example, with revisions to a print ad. One person might suggest one set of changes where another will want the opposite, so streamlining communication over the matter (rather than a constant back-and-forth) sometimes becomes my responsibility.

Do you enjoy working on group projects?
We don’t often have group projects in the traditional sense here because we’re such a small company.

What is your ideal work environment? As you’ve probably gathered from interning here the past few months, things at Metropolitan are very relaxed, which I would say is my “ideal work environment.” I think it’s the kind of environment promotes a higher level of respect among employees and their superiors – after all, no one wants to be yelled at every day at work!

How has your education and experience prepared you for your current job?
In terms of education and experience, I went to the Gallatin School of Individualized Study at NYU, which is a small college within the larger university where you design your own concentration. My concentration was in music & entrepreneurship and my thesis focused on gender politics in the music industry. Because of the flexibility of my program I was able to pick the majority of my classes to cater to my concentration as opposed to having to fulfill a bunch of requirements. Gallatin also encourages spending a large majority of time outside of the traditional classroom setting, by taking on independent studies, participating in internships, and even creating your own classes with a small group of students with similar interests (we called them tutorials). I think the flexibility of my program – not to mention living in New York – prepared me well for the “working world;” unlike most students, I was exposed to it pretty early on (for example, internships in music, film production, marketing, & PR from my freshman year forward; I was also the president of the only student-run record label at NYU which taught me a lot about the DIY/indie world).

Have you reached out to mentors and has the mentorship system worked for you?
I don’t really have any specific mentors nor do I model my work behavior after anyone – instead I try to learn as much as I can from everyone that I work with and create my own path.

Shadow

I shadowed my main supervisor the past few days. Her name is Chelsea and she arrives everyday five minutes before everyone else strolls in. I know this because I go in 15 minutes early every time I show up to my applied study. Since I started, I have noticed that she does a number of different things. However, when I made a purpose to focus on her activities, her primary task revolves around creating and revising marketing ad plans. I constantly notice the graphic designer walk back and forth from his office to Chelsea’s desk. Focusing on their conversations, it seems like she is overseeing the creation of all the print advertisements for Metropolitan Talent Presents. She uses the interns including myself as extra sets of eyes to proof the ads as well. She also coordinates ordering and delivery of radio and television promo spots for upcoming shows. She takes hours monitoring production and delivery of product to fulfill our purchase orders from our distributor. Yesterday, she created an excel sheet that took about 6 hours straight that laid out our updated inventory list which monitors incoming invoices for advertisements Metropolitan has placed in print. She takes her lunch everyday from 2-3 PM and always leaves at 6:30 PM. It is hard to shadow someone for a long period of time at my internship but I did learn many things from Chelsea. She does not have someone constantly giving her work to do. She was hired because it seems like she was an asset to the company and could add her personal creativity and dedication.

Week 4

As a career, I could definitely see myself working for Interscope Records in the future. However, I do not see myself working for the marketing firm, Metropolitan Talent, which I am currently doing my applied study at. My future career goals include socializing and starting at a position that utilizes my strong educational background, relative work experience, demonstrated leadership, and team building skills within a growth oriented, progressive company. I started about 3 weeks earlier then most people in our class so I am becoming much more involved and aware. I do not see a position that I want to work towards. I feel it is a lot more motivating when I know hard work will pay off. I am also starting to realize that New York City is not a place that I want to live in. It is extremely hectic and everything is more expensive. I am currently commuting for this experience from my home in New Jersey and it is a pain in the @#$! Another thing that I dislike is my constant work sitting in front of a computer screen. I will sit there for over 5 hours straight researching topics and doing various tasks. To be completely honest, I think the main thing I am learning through this experience is patience. I am learning a lot about independence, strengthening my communication skills, and listening to instructions within a team. When I do not have work to do, I will go into one of the boss’s offices and try to start conversations with them and ask if there is anything I can do to help their lives easier. In the future, I would consider working in an educational setting because learning is endless. Just a side comment… I drove my little brother who is studying pre-med at Penn State to an informational session for a Medical School called St. George’s University in Grenada. It was intriguing to see such driven people and hear from Graduate Students. An educational setting definitely seems interesting to me.

Conceps/Theories

My applied study can relate to many theories and concepts I have learned through Business and Communications. First, the trait theory helps me better understand and realize leadership. I learn something new about leadership every time I go to my internship. Identifying certain traits about people and having an idea of why they take certain actions is very important. Leaders stand out and I like how there are multiple leaders and anyone can take the lead in something if they want. The leader-member exchange theory is used to identify people who build relationships based on their personality. Being in the business world for the first time, I finally realize how personality plays a big role. Certain people got to the position they are at by integrating their personality. No matter what the traits are, they were not afraid to show it and it makes me a lot more comfortable at my internship when someone has a good personality. The coordinated management of meaning technique I learned about helps people focus on how communication coordinates with meaning; why and how people perform in the ways they do. Obviously people are going to be affected and work within their job position but I definitely see people work harder then others. Motivation is crucial and this concept plays a huge role in everyone's performance. Lastly, the contingency theory of management relates to my applied study because I am developing leadership traits by being able to notice these characteristics in our managers/leaders: charismatic, transformational, transactional, servant, and emotional intelligence. Instead of just sitting back and doing my work, I am working just as hard trying to figure out all these skills that I hope to attain in my future.

Week 2

Metropolitan Talent, marketing firm for Interscope records, operates in more of a multidisciplinary manner. I first thought that a marketing firm like this held in NYC would be a group of marketing majors but people come from all different backgrounds and can all bring something special to the table. The common goal in mind for all positions in the organization is to promote all the artists on the label. However, every individual does something different that connects with their specific talent. I sat in on my first management meeting for instance. There is a management team that discusses the reality of making certain decisions from a promoter’s standpoint. There is a hierarchy in each team and then there is a group of supervisors and interns like myself who are doing the busy work. I also sat in on a meeting of a team that deals with artist’s proposals who want to be part of the label as well as a team that deals with finances and digital services that deal with the share of sales. All of these perfectly organized teams come together and intertwine daily. “Disciplines” are defined like the smoothie connection we learned about in other BIS classes. It seems like everyone works on tasks together within their team but it all mixes together to form the business. From what I have witnessed so far, there is a hierarchical structure since there are managers and people above everyone that you always have to relay your work to.

Blog #1

Hi class. My name is Jesse Goldberg and I just finished my fourth year at ASU. I decided to hold off on BIS 401 until the summer and graduate this August because I knew I was moving back to New Jersey and wanted to use this as a resource for a job opportunity. I played soccer all four years for our Men's Club Soccer Team and was hoping to play professional next year but tore my ACL first game of my senior season this past fall. Anyway, my chosen concentration areas are business and communications. I chose these because I was tired of computer programming and wanted to expand my communication skills since I hope to be a sports team general manager or owner one day. I have always been a motivated soccer player my whole life. I learned at a young age that working as a team usually works better than working individually. My four years at Arizona State have taught me many things about my own identity. Networking in business is vital and using my interpersonal skills will help me progress. I have always understood that building close business relationships is crucial if I want to move up in a company. No matter what I have always done in my life, I never settled for anything and always wanted more. My applied study is at Metropolitan Talent Inc. in New York City. This company is the marketing firm for Interscope records, which is a big music record label. I am commuting from my home in New Jersey and have learned many things already. Academically, I hope to learn how to entertain and attract an audience through words. I am writing blogs and trying to convince people to buy tickets for concerts. Personally, I want to become comfortable at a full time day job and learn how certain people got to the position they are at. I also hope to learn why certain leaders succeed or fail. The responsibilities I have accomplished so far include creating multiple blog posts for future performances, maintaining inventory, updating press releases, and picking up packages through out NYC for my bosses. These are all related to what I have been studying because of the skills required. Communications includes written skills, which help expand my verbal skills. I am thinking outside of the box and designing things on my own to market artists, which directly relates to everything I have studied especially in all three BIS classes. My future goals after graduation are not set in stone but I hope to have a full time job set up in a sales or marketing firm. Sports and music are my main hobbies and I want to stay in that field. I cannot tell if this organization is the type of career I hope to continue yet. Up to this point, I cannot say that I see one person’s job that I hope to have one day. However, it is far too early and I look forward to making this decision. The entertainment industry’s line of work is definitely something I enjoy but cannot promise I will always continue in marketing.
